Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur is acutely aware of what needs to change if his team is to mount a serious challenge against Mercedes for the 2026 Formula 1 championship. As the season hits its midpoint, Ferrari finds itself trailing Mercedes, with Vasseur emphasizing the need for consistent performance to turn things around.
Although Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes currently leads the drivers' standings by a solid margin, Ferrari and their star driver, Lewis Hamilton, remain in contention. Hamilton, despite a 50-point deficit to the young Italian, still has his sights set on breaking Ferrari's two-decade dry spell without a championship.
Reflecting on the first half of the season, Vasseur described Ferrari's performance as 'average,' noting that they have been off the pace compared to Mercedes. "We've managed to pick up around 100 points and have been strong since the Spanish Grand Prix, but it's not enough," he said in an interview with Canal+ following the Hungarian Grand Prix.
In Hungary, Ferrari had a promising start with Charles Leclerc leading the first practice session and Hamilton topping the second. However, their early momentum fizzled out, and they finished the race in fourth and fifth positions. Meanwhile, Antonelli secured a third-place finish, further extending his lead.
Vasseur's call for improvement is clear: Ferrari cannot afford to squander weekends where they start strong but fail to capitalize. "We can't let weekends slip by where we're 1st and 2nd on Friday and end up 4th and 5th on Sunday," he stressed.
Ferrari's boss is under pressure to deliver results and bring an end to the team's long-standing championship drought. If Vasseur is to remain at the helm, he needs to ensure Ferrari's performance aligns with their potential, particularly in the latter half of the season.
With races still to come, Ferrari must focus on refining race strategies and maximizing their car's performance if they are to close the gap and challenge Mercedes for the title. As the competition heats up, the team's ability to remain consistent and capitalize on opportunities will be key to their championship aspirations.
