Franco Colapinto has spoken out against the social media abuse targeting him and his Alpine team, urging fans to put an end to such behavior. His statement comes as abuse has also been directed at fellow drivers Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris.
Franco Colapinto has decided it's time to draw a line under the increasingly toxic behavior he's witnessed on social media. In a candid statement, the Alpine driver expressed his gratitude for fan support but highlighted the darker side of the fan base, noting that some have crossed the line.
Colapinto's comments come in the wake of recent online abuse directed at himself, his team, and fellow drivers Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris. As the United States Grand Prix approaches, Colapinto took to his social media to address the issue directly.
He remarked, "I've been always very grateful to all the fans supporting me. Every sport and fan base has a bad side, and the negative comments aren't helping athletes perform their best."
Colapinto continued, "It's crossed a few lines lately. I've talked a lot about it, and making a statement and video was a positive step. My mechanics and engineers have received hate, and it hurts because these are people working with me daily."
He added, "The abuse isn't just limited to drivers; it's a broader issue affecting many areas, including artists and actors. Max [Verstappen] also made a statement about it. It's happening a lot and is a significant issue in sports today."
When asked if the abuse was reaching team members directly, Colapinto admitted, "I don't have their phones, so I can't say for sure. But they have received messages and comments that crossed the line."
Colapinto emphasized that he wants to move past this topic and focus on racing, explaining, "That's why I made a statement—to stop discussing this every weekend and concentrate on racing."
Despite these issues, Colapinto's performances on track have been commendable, earning him a secure spot with Alpine for another season, well ahead of any potential rumors. It seems his focus on racing is paying off, even as he navigates the challenges of online interactions.
