George Russell candidly discusses a challenging 2026 season, acknowledging Kimi Antonelli's impending championship win. Despite setbacks, Russell remains optimistic about future opportunities with Mercedes.
George Russell has taken a moment to reflect on his experiences throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season, a year that he admits has thoroughly tested his character and resilience. The British driver has come to terms with the near certainty that his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, will clinch the Drivers’ Championship, saying, “it’s a matter of when, not if.”
Russell began the year with strong performances, but as the season progressed, he found himself grappling with car issues and reliability problems, which saw Antonelli pull ahead. Despite claiming victories in Austria and Azerbaijan, Russell watched as other teams caught up to Mercedes through strategic upgrades, leaving his hopes for a first championship title fading.
With the United States Grand Prix on the horizon, Antonelli stands on the brink of becoming champion, needing Russell to finish ninth or lower to seal the deal. However, Russell is pragmatic about his position, acknowledging, “Whether it’s this weekend or next weekend, it’s a matter of when, not if, he clinches it. That’s the reality of the fact.”
Russell has faced a season that demanded introspection and resilience. “I’ve had to look at myself in the mirror numerous times and think, ‘How do I want to bounce back from these blows?’” he explained. The challenge was not just to accept the misfortune or subpar performances but to strive for improvement and control what he could. He takes pride in his tenacity, stating, “I’ve always done my utmost to keep myself in the fight.”
Looking forward, Russell is buoyed by the knowledge that he and Antonelli will continue with Mercedes in 2027. He believes the trials of this season have been invaluable for his development. “I wouldn’t necessarily say there’s a lesson as such, but there have been a lot of things I’ve adapted to and improved on through the struggles I’ve had. It’s been a season that has very much tested my character and resilience.”
Reflecting on his experiences, Russell noted how this season has been unlike any other in his career. “I guess I’ve learned a lot about myself being in these moments, because I’ve never really found myself in this position in my career before.” This self-awareness and adaptation are lessons he plans to carry with him into the future.
Despite the challenges, Russell remains focused on the bigger picture. “When I look back earlier in the year, the things that were keeping me up at night weren’t necessarily about the championship.” Instead, his concerns revolved around personal performance and finding ways to regain his form.
The season's misfortunes may have added insult to injury, but Russell is determined to stay the course. “I intend to be here for many, many, many years to come, and you can’t give up when you’re being kicked to the floor. You’ve got to bounce back.” It’s a testament to his perseverance that he remains committed to giving his all.
As the season winds down, Russell remains hopeful for the future. “At the end of this weekend, we’ll see what we can do. We’ll try to get Mercedes back on top because it’s been a while, and let’s see what the future holds.”
