George Russell Reflects on Second Place Finish at Italian Grand Prix

George Russell was leading much of the Italian Grand Prix with a strong performance until a late-race overtake by his teammate Kimi Antonelli saw him finishing in second place. Reflecting on the race, Russell shared that Antonelli's pit stop during the Virtual Safety Car phase caught him off guard.

"Huge congratulations to Kimi, it was an incredible result," Russell remarked after the race. "When I saw him climbing up the leaderboard so quickly from P19, I knew he'd be in the mix."

Russell had initially taken the lead from polesitter Pierre Gasly, while Antonelli was making impressive progress from a challenging start. The Italian driver made his way through the field and engaged in an exciting battle for the lead with Russell.

The turning point came when a Virtual Safety Car was deployed due to Lance Stroll's Aston Martin stopping on track. Mercedes opted to pit Antonelli for fresh tires, while Russell stayed out. This decision initially set Antonelli back, but he quickly climbed back to second and eventually overtook Russell with just a few laps remaining.

"I was surprised to see him pit," Russell admitted when asked about the strategy decision. "I thought we were both staying out. It was a roll of the dice, and at the time, the team couldn't have known which strategy would work best."

Despite the setback, Russell was gracious in defeat, praising Antonelli's pace and expressing relief at securing a solid result after some inconsistent performances earlier in the season. "It was looking like a strong race for us, but I struggled with the tires towards the end. We did the whole race on one hard tire," he explained. "Still, it's been more positive than before the summer break, and that's what I needed."

With Antonelli's victory, he extends his lead in the Drivers' Championship, now 66 points ahead of Russell. However, Russell has solidified his grip on second place, maintaining a comfortable lead over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.
