Hamilton Reflects on Ferrari's Disappointing Italian GP at Monza

Lewis Hamilton's home race for Ferrari at Monza didn't exactly go according to plan, as a series of unfortunate events led to a 'devastating' sixth-place finish. Despite starting in a promising fourth position, Hamilton was unable to make a significant impact on the race.

The Italian fans, who had high hopes for their Ferrari drivers, watched as their dreams unraveled right from the start. Hamilton's ambitious move on teammate Charles Leclerc at the first corner backfired, leaving him scrambling in the gravel by Turn 2 and dropping him to the outskirts of the top ten. "I ended up around P10 or so," Hamilton noted, clearly disappointed, adding, "There's not really much to say. We'll take it offline."

Meanwhile, Leclerc's day was cut short in dramatic fashion. By the end of the second lap, he found himself in the barriers at the final corner after an overcorrection led to a heavy crash, prompting a red flag. Reflecting on the incident with Hamilton, Leclerc commented, "With Lewis, it was way too close into Turn 1, and unfortunately, in Turn 2—I don't know if we had contact." He expressed his frustration, noting that seeing such incidents in the mirrors is never ideal.

Post-restart, Hamilton made a strategic choice to stay on medium tires, battling McLaren's Oscar Piastri for fourth place. However, the decision not to pit under a Virtual Safety Car proved costly. He lost positions to Kimi Antonelli, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris, eventually crossing the finish line in sixth. "A bit devastating. Tough one to swallow," Hamilton remarked, lamenting the strategic missteps. "We probably chose the wrong tire. Whether that would have made much difference, maybe we could have held onto them a bit longer, but they just kept flying past us. They were just quicker today."

Ferrari's Monza outing was a stark reminder of the challenges that come with racing at home, where expectations run high and the margin for error is slim. While the Italian Grand Prix proved to be a struggle for Hamilton and Ferrari, it was a day of triumph for Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who staged a remarkable comeback to take the win.
