Horner's Farewell Speech Sparks Rumors of Verstappen's Departure

Red Bull staff expected Christian Horner to announce Max Verstappen's departure during his farewell speech, only to be surprised by Horner's own exit. The unexpected news came amid team tensions and rumors of Mercedes' interest in Verstappen.

Christian Horner, the long-serving team principal of Red Bull, was dismissed in 2025, following reported internal disputes and a loss of support from the team’s owners. His departure marked the end of a 20-year tenure during which he led the team to multiple championships. When Horner addressed the Red Bull staff for a farewell speech, many anticipated he would announce star driver Max Verstappen’s departure instead. The expectation arose from persistent rumors suggesting Verstappen was unhappy and possibly eyeing a move to Mercedes.

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Horner shared how the atmosphere in the room shifted from anticipation to shock when he revealed he was the one leaving. "Standing in front of the team, I wanted to do that," Horner recounted, noting the emotional response from staff who were visibly moved by the announcement. The room had been packed, with everyone bracing for news about Verstappen, reflecting the swirling speculation about his potential exit.

The context for these rumors was a turbulent period at Red Bull, with key figures like Adrian Newey, Rob Marshall, and Jonathan Wheatley already having left. The team environment had reportedly become toxic, partly due to Horner's strained relationship with Helmut Marko, Red Bull's chief advisor, who also left at the end of 2025.

Despite the challenges, Verstappen remained with the team, although the start of the 2026 season proved difficult. Adjusting to a new car setup and regulations, Verstappen initially struggled with the RB22’s instability. However, the team eventually hit its stride, with Verstappen securing victories in recent races at Sepang and Singapore.

As for Horner, rumors of his next move circulated, with suggestions he might lead a buyout or join another team, though he has dismissed the idea of joining Ferrari unless a shareholding was involved. The speculation around his future continues, as fans and insiders alike ponder where Horner’s considerable experience might next be applied.
