Jak Crawford to Step in for Lance Stroll at Mexican GP FP1

Lance Stroll will sit out FP1 at the Mexican Grand Prix, with Jak Crawford taking his place. This move allows Aston Martin to meet its rookie session requirements.

Aston Martin has confirmed that Lance Stroll will not participate in the first practice session (FP1) of the Mexican Grand Prix, as Jak Crawford steps in. This decision, announced just before the Austin event, allows Aston Martin to fulfill its obligation to run a rookie driver in FP1 sessions across the season.

Jak Crawford, a 21-year-old reserve driver, is set to join the team on track in Mexico City, marking his fourth FP1 appearance of the season. The regulations require each team to field a rookie driver, defined as having two or fewer Grand Prix entries, in four FP1 sessions annually. Consequently, each of the regular drivers must give up their seat twice a year.

Crawford expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "I’m really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the AMR26 in Mexico City. It’s a special circuit for me as it’s where I made my FP1 debut last year, so it’s great to return with more experience under my belt." He also noted the significance of the announcement coinciding with his home race weekend in Austin.

Mike Krack, Aston Martin’s chief trackside officer, remarked, "We are pleased to give Jak another opportunity in the AMR26. He returns to Mexico City with considerably more experience than when he made his FP1 debut there last year." Krack emphasized Crawford's contributions through simulations and testing, highlighting the session as a chance to further support the team's weekend preparations.

Crawford, who was the runner-up in the 2025 Formula 2 championship, made his first FP1 appearance of the 2026 season at Suzuka, followed by sessions at the Red Bull Ring and Spa. The Aston Martin team, alongside new engine supplier Honda, has faced challenges this season, notably with reliability issues. Lance Stroll has had five DNFs in the last six races, while Fernando Alonso has reported problems with the Honda power unit’s driveability and deployment.
