Kimi Antonelli Eyes Maiden Title with 'Perfect Weekend' at US Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of becoming the youngest F1 champion during the United States Grand Prix. A victory in Austin, paired with less-than-stellar finishes from rivals, could seal the deal for the Mercedes driver.

Kimi Antonelli could make history at the United States Grand Prix, but he's keeping his expectations in check. As the weekend approaches, the young Mercedes driver remains focused on the task at hand without getting lost in the what-ifs.

Antonelli expressed that winning his first Formula 1 title in Austin "would be a dream," though he's well aware that he'll need a "perfect weekend" to make it happen. The statistics are impressive: eight wins and six podiums in 17 races this season have put him within striking distance of the championship.

However, for Antonelli to clinch the title, he not only needs to win but also requires a bit of luck. His teammate and closest competitor, George Russell, must finish no higher than ninth, and rivals like Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's Max Verstappen need to fall down the order as well.

"It's crazy if you think about it, but that's why I won't think about it," Antonelli said at Thursday's media day, reflecting on his approach to the weekend. "I need a perfect weekend, and the others need to have a poor result, which is unlikely. Anything can happen, but it's crazy to dwell on it."

He added that after a meeting with his race engineer, Bono, the plan remains simple: "just have fun" and maintain the same mindset he's had all year. "One race at a time and just try to do the best I can every race weekend, and then we'll see," he said. "If I do things well, the result will come."

At just 20, Antonelli has the chance to break Sebastian Vettel's record from 2010 as the youngest F1 champion. Lewis Hamilton, who briefly teamed with Antonelli during his final season at Mercedes in 2024, praised the young Italian for his performance this year.

Asked about the prospect of following in Hamilton's footsteps, Antonelli commented, "It would be a dream. It's something I've dreamt of since I was little. To find myself in such a position is incredible, but I need to keep going and pushing. It's not over yet. First, we'll try to finish the job properly and then enjoy the rest."

While the championship remains within reach, Antonelli knows there's still work to be done. His focus is clear: execute on the track and let the results speak for themselves.
