Kimi Antonelli Finds Promise in Mercedes' Upgrades in Singapore

Kimi Antonelli is optimistic about Mercedes' recent upgrades after securing fourth on the grid for the Singapore Grand Prix. Despite initial struggles, adjustments to his car have shown potential, offering hope for a competitive race.

Kimi Antonelli is feeling optimistic about the recent upgrades to his Mercedes, as he lines up fourth on the grid for the Singapore Grand Prix. After some initial teething problems with the new parts in Sepang, the weekend in Singapore has offered a glimmer of hope.

Mercedes took an interesting approach by running different specifications for their drivers: Antonelli, the brave soul, stuck with the new upgrades while his teammate George Russell reverted to the older package. This choice initially seemed to favor Russell, who secured second in Sprint Qualifying, leaving Antonelli languishing in seventh. Yet, as fate would have it, Russell's race was cut short by a crash, while Antonelli climbed to fourth.

The main Qualifying session saw a reversal of fortunes. With some strategic set-up changes, Antonelli outpaced Russell, claiming fourth with the Briton trailing in sixth. However, an engine penalty means Russell will start at the back, leaving Antonelli to lead the Mercedes charge.

Reflecting on the improvements, Antonelli noted, "Yeah, it did feel better, in a better place. I feel like the team did a tremendous job on doing these changes and putting the car in a better window." He admitted that finding balance remained tricky, as the car's behavior shifted with each tweak. But the team’s efforts seemed to be paying off, with Antonelli stating, "All in all, I think that today was a better day, and we start seeing the potential of the package."

Looking ahead to the race, Antonelli will be behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen and the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. He remains hopeful that the car’s performance will improve further in race conditions. "In Qualifying, you're pushing to the absolute limit," he remarked, "For sure, I feel like tomorrow we can work our way around it a bit more, and hopefully we can fight for a podium."

With a challenging grid ahead, Antonelli and Mercedes have their work cut out. However, the signs are promising, and with a bit of luck, the upgrades might just deliver the results the team has been striving for.
