Bernie Ecclestone believes Kimi Antonelli will eventually join Ferrari, driven by a patriotic connection. Despite Antonelli's current success with Mercedes, there's speculation about his potential move to the Italian team.
Kimi Antonelli has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first Italian Formula 1 World Champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. At just 20, he has also set a record as the youngest-ever champion in the sport. Celebrating his title with the Italian flag, Antonelli stood alongside Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, sparking conversations about a possible future with Ferrari.
Bernie Ecclestone, never one to shy away from expressing his opinions, is convinced that Antonelli will eventually make the switch to Ferrari. In a conversation with F1 Insider, Ecclestone stated, "Ferrari has no choice, they have to do it. And Kimi’s heart beats Italian." The allure of representing his homeland could be a compelling reason for Antonelli to consider Ferrari, despite his current position at Mercedes.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently noted that Ferrari might have placed Antonelli in a junior team instead of giving him the trust and opportunity that Mercedes did. It’s a subtle reminder of the support Mercedes has shown Antonelli, highlighting the challenges Ferrari would face in enticing the young champion.
Speculation over Antonelli’s career trajectory is inevitable, with notable figures like Ralf Schumacher echoing Ecclestone’s sentiments. Schumacher believes that despite the strong ties with Mercedes, Antonelli's future might eventually lead him to Ferrari.
For now, Antonelli's immediate transition to Ferrari seems unlikely. The Italian team is already dealing with intra-team tensions, notably between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Hamilton is eager to secure his eighth world championship, particularly with the upcoming African Grand Prix in Rwanda, while Leclerc remains a central figure in Ferrari's long-term plans.
Any potential move for Antonelli would force Ferrari into a difficult decision regarding their current drivers. With Hamilton and Leclerc both deeply entrenched in the team, introducing Antonelli would require a significant reshuffle.
Antonelli himself has expressed admiration for Ferrari, calling it an "immense" global brand. Given his Italian heritage and Ferrari's iconic status, a future partnership seems plausible, if not inevitable.
In the meantime, Antonelli continues to thrive at Mercedes, a team that has nurtured his talent and supported his rise to the pinnacle of Formula 1. Whether driven by patriotism or practical career considerations, any move to Ferrari will be watched with keen interest.
