Lando Norris: Committing to McLaren for the Long Haul

Lando Norris is in high spirits, and for good reason. The British driver, known for his ever-present smile, is even more buoyant than usual when we sit down at the sleek McLaren Technology Centre. He's just inked a new deal that ties him to McLaren until the end of 2030, potentially matching the long stint Lewis Hamilton enjoyed with Mercedes.

For Norris, this isn't just a contract; it's a declaration of loyalty to a team that feels like home. "I'm very, very excited," he says, in his first interview since the announcement. "McLaren's been my home since I started in Formula 1. I want it to stay that way for as long as possible."

Norris's journey with McLaren began as a test and development driver, progressing to a reserve role before stepping up to a full race seat in 2019. His career highlights with McLaren include his first podium in Austria 2020, a pole position in Russia 2021, and his maiden Grand Prix win in Miami 2024. By 2025, he was celebrating a Monaco victory and winning on home turf at Silverstone, culminating in his first World Championship and McLaren’s first drivers’ title since 2008.

"I know for a good amount more years that I'm comfortable," he explains. "I'm with the people that I want to be with, and for me, that's calming. I can focus on the job I need to do, and as a team, we can focus on what we want to achieve."

Norris is content, even if the team isn't always winning. "I don't want to be bouncing around teams. I want to be where I'm happy," he reveals. "Even when we're not winning, I'm still happy to be part of McLaren."

The current season started on a shaky note for McLaren, with both cars failing to start in both Australia and China. However, an upgrade in Hungary turned their fortunes around, allowing Norris to clinch his and the team's first victory of the season. Despite being 83 points behind the championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, Norris remains upbeat about his chances, drawing inspiration from last year's dramatic title chase led by Max Verstappen.

"This renewal isn't just about current form," Norris clarifies. "We had been in discussions since my championship win in Abu Dhabi last year. It was about continuity and ensuring we can focus on our performance without distractions from contract talks."

Norris has faith in McLaren's leadership under CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella. "Zak is a great leader and boss," says Norris, appreciating Brown's honesty and support. "Andrea is an incredible leader who knows how to bring a team together and push individuals like me to perform better."

As Norris looks to the future, he's clear about his intentions. "I want to make this my home," he states. "I want it to be the place I am at for a very long time, maybe even forever. There are more nice things here that allow me to work and live better."

With his new contract in place, Norris is set to continue his journey with McLaren, aiming for more success and a long-lasting relationship with the team he's grown to love.
