Lando Norris expressed dissatisfaction with his fourth-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix, emphasizing McLaren's ambition to compete for victories. Despite a strong drive, Norris finished far behind race winner Max Verstappen.
Lando Norris, the reigning World Champion, didn't mince words after finishing fourth in the Singapore Grand Prix. Despite a solid drive through the 62 laps at Marina Bay, he found himself 40 seconds adrift of Max Verstappen, the race winner. Norris made it clear that McLaren's sights are set higher, stating, "We want to fight for wins."
Starting fifth on the grid, Norris was immediately in a tussle, trailing Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. A strategic mid-race pit stop on fresh tires allowed Norris to leapfrog Antonelli and mount pressure on Hamilton, who was struggling on worn softs. However, an attempt to pass Hamilton at Turn 1 backfired, allowing Antonelli to regain his position. Eventually, Norris managed to overtake Hamilton, securing fourth place.
"I can look at it in two ways," Norris reflected. "While P4 isn't bad, I think we could have done better. I should've fought harder for P3 and positioned my car better against Lewis. Still, given our pace, P4 was probably the best we could do today, but we want more."
Despite finishing 16 seconds shy of a podium, Norris recognized McLaren's slip in performance since their summer victories. "Red Bull is the team to beat right now. They've clearly stepped up, and we've fallen to the back of the top four," he noted. "Being the fourth fastest team means a P4 finish is a decent result, but I'm not satisfied. We need podiums and wins, which means we must keep improving and upgrading our car."
Meanwhile, Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri managed a fifth-place finish, having overtaken Hamilton late in the race. Despite an unscheduled stop due to a slow puncture, Piastri echoed Norris' sentiments on the team's performance. "We just didn't have the pace to match Max or Charles [Leclerc], and Kimi was quicker too. Our result was pretty much the best we could do under the circumstances," Piastri admitted.
As McLaren heads into the next race, both drivers and their team remain focused on closing the gap to the frontrunners, determined to return to the top step of the podium.
