Laurent Mekies: Red Bull's Phone Lines Buzzing with Driver Interest Amid Verstappen Speculation

Laurent Mekies recently shed some light on the current driver market from Red Bull's vantage point. With Max Verstappen's future with the team hanging in the balance, Red Bull is busy fielding inquiries from a host of talented drivers eager to claim a seat. The team is keen to retain their current line-up featuring Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, but the situation remains fluid.

As the summer break looms following the Hungarian Grand Prix, the chatter about 2027 driver line-ups is heating up. Much of the speculation hinges on Verstappen's next move. His contract with Red Bull, where he clinched four championships from 2021 to 2024, runs through 2028. However, it’s believed that performance-related escape clauses could allow him to jump ship before then.

This season, Verstappen's win column is yet to be filled as Red Bull struggles to keep pace with frontrunners like Mercedes and Ferrari. While the team works to close this gap, rumors of Verstappen eyeing a move to reigning champions McLaren are gaining traction.

Reflecting on these swirling rumors during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Mekies told _Sky Sports F1_: "It's a two-way street. Naturally, Max, being one of the best drivers in the world, gets calls from every team. Likewise, as a top team, we receive interest from many great drivers. It doesn't distract us, though. Our focus remains on improving the car's speed to keep the best driver in the world happy."

Verstappen has faced challenges this season, from a lack of pace to reliability issues and unpredictable crashes, notably due to a faulty rear wing that was replaced in Belgium. Despite these setbacks, he secured his third podium of the year there.

Mekies emphasized Red Bull's unwavering goal of winning, which aligns with Verstappen's ambitions. "Winning is the only objective at Red Bull Racing, and it's the same for Max," he stated. Mekies highlighted the team's capability for rapid progress, recalling last year's impressive recovery from a 104-point deficit to nearly clinch a fifth title for Verstappen.

"The group that turned things around last year is the same one working now," Mekies said. "We've shaved nearly a second off our competitors, and we're focusing on those crucial final tenths. A united team effort is how we'll achieve the best results."

While the driver market buzzes with speculation, Red Bull's priority is clear: to improve their car's performance and maintain their promising driver pairing of Verstappen and Hadjar.
