Liam Lawson's Bold Move: How a Meeting with Helmut Marko Sparked His F1 Breakthrough
Liam Lawson seized his chance in Formula 1 by directly confronting Helmut Marko about his future. A fortuitous twist of events at Zandvoort resulted in Lawson stepping into a race seat, showcasing the unpredictable nature of the sport.
Liam Lawson found himself at a crossroads in 2023, feeling the sting of missed opportunities as he awaited his big break in Formula 1. Since 2019, the Kiwi had been part of the Red Bull junior program, climbing through the ranks of Formula 3 and Formula 2, and serving as a reserve driver for Red Bull and its sister team. Despite finishing third in Formula 2 in 2022, Lawson was passed over for a seat, with Red Bull opting for Nyck de Vries and later Daniel Ricciardo for their junior team, leaving Lawson to race in Japan's Super Formula.
Frustrated but determined, Lawson flew to Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix. He was armed with a straightforward question for Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motorsport advisor: "Why won’t you just give me a chance?" Lawson recounted this bold move during an episode of F1's Off the Grid, explaining, "I decided I’m just going to sit down with Helmut and press him, basically find out what he’s thinking."
The conversation was tense. "I went into his office on Friday morning at Zandvoort," Lawson recalled, "and said, ‘You’ve invested all this money in me. What’s the point? I’ve been in the programme for five years.’" Marko's response was less than encouraging, leaving Lawson to reflect on a tough conversation.
But fate had a different plan. That same day, Ricciardo suffered a significant crash during the second practice session, fracturing a metacarpal in seven places. With Ricciardo sidelined, AlphaTauri needed a replacement driver.
Lawson described the moment he learned of his opportunity: "I went to Helmut, and he just looked at me and said, ‘Are you ready?’ I said: ‘Yep’. And that was the whole conversation." It was a classic case of being in the right place at the right time.
Lawson made the most of his unexpected debut, scoring two points across five Grands Prix before Ricciardo's return. The experience solidified his role as a reserve driver in 2024, and Lawson was back in the car for the final six races, vying for a seat in the 2025 season.
When asked about replacing Ricciardo, Lawson was pragmatic. "As much as it sucks, we’re all fighting for these seats. There’s nothing personal to it," he explained. "But when you’re fighting for your career, it’s just everything and you can’t put anything in front of that."
Fast forward to 2025, Lawson returned to the rebranded Racing Bulls team, contributing 43 of the team’s 66 points that season. It’s a testament to his resilience and readiness to seize opportunities when they present themselves.
