Lando Norris has been dealing with engine issues that have impacted his race performance. McLaren believes they've identified the problem and are optimistic about a solution.
Lando Norris has been grappling with an engine issue that has cost him precious tenths of a second per lap in recent races. This hiccup was evident in his performances at Baku and Sepang, where he struggled to keep pace with competitors. Martin Brundle noted that McLaren initially couldn't pinpoint the issue affecting Norris's performance. However, recent developments suggest that the team may have finally found a solution.
Sky Sports F1's Ted Kravitz highlighted the newfound optimism in the McLaren camp during the FP1 session at the Singapore Grand Prix. "Let me tell you about some optimism on Lando Norris’ car," Kravitz remarked. "McLaren think they’ve found some of the issues that have been affecting his car in a straight line." The team hopes that modifications to the fuel system could help Norris recoup the tenths he's been losing.
This optimism seems to have paid off, as Norris clocked the third-fastest time in Friday’s FP1 session, trailing George Russell by just under three-tenths of a second. While the Marina Bay Street Circuit isn't heavily reliant on engine power, the aerodynamic setup is crucial through its 19 tight corners. Even if Norris still battles engine issues, the impact might be less noticeable, though it could still affect grid positions or podium chances.
The 2026-spec Mercedes power unit has been a thorn in McLaren's side throughout this season, contributing to a rocky start where they only fielded one car in the initial rounds. However, with the latest adjustments, there is renewed hope that Norris can perform closer to his potential as the season progresses.
