McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri Reflect on Singapore Sprint Collision

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have shared their thoughts on the last-lap collision during the Singapore Grand Prix Sprint. Both McLaren drivers were involved in a tense battle for position, which ended with Piastri retiring and Norris finishing in eighth.

In the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix Sprint, McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri found themselves in an unfortunate tangle on the final lap. The pair were running closely in fourth and fifth positions on the damp streets of Marina Bay, right behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who was struggling with worn intermediate tires.

As the race neared its climax, Norris attempted a move on Piastri at Turn 5, hoping to snatch fourth place. Norris dove to the inside and pulled alongside Piastri but had to back out as the gap closed. This resulted in contact between Norris's left-front tire and Piastri's right-rear, sending both cars into a spin. Piastri hit the wall and was forced to retire, while Norris managed to recover and cross the finish line in eighth place. After reviewing the incident, the stewards decided not to take any further action.

Reflecting on the incident, Norris commented, "I think the pace was very strong. We were just stuck the whole race, and the last lap presented a big opportunity into Turn 5. I went for it, but the gap closed more than I'd anticipated. I had to try and avoid the incident, but obviously, there still was one. It was a big gap, and I have the right to go for it. We'll review it as a team."

Oscar Piastri, on the other hand, acknowledged his struggles during the race, particularly at the start and towards the end, as he tried to manage his worn tires. "I need to look at it. I didn't see him at the apex," Piastri said about the incident with Norris. "I looked behind into the corner and saw he was a reasonable way back for a corner like that, but I'll review it, and the team will handle it as needed."

The McLaren duo's clash was just one of many dramatic moments in a race weekend full of intrigue. As the dust settles, both drivers will undoubtedly focus on refining their strategies for the upcoming races.
