Nico Rosberg Says Kimi Antonelli Not Yet F1's Best Despite Schumacher Comparisons

Nico Rosberg acknowledges Kimi Antonelli's impressive performances this season but still sees Max Verstappen as the top driver in Formula 1. Despite Antonelli's standout races, Rosberg believes the young Italian has more to prove.

Nico Rosberg, the former Formula 1 world champion, has given his verdict on the current crop of drivers and believes that Kimi Antonelli, despite his remarkable performances this season, isn't yet the 'best driver' on the grid. Rosberg, while impressed with Antonelli's progress, still holds Max Verstappen in higher regard.

Antonelli, who has been leading the F1 standings for much of the 2026 season, is on the brink of clinching the drivers' title, potentially as soon as the next race in Austin. His standout performances have drawn comparisons to Michael Schumacher, especially following his maiden Grand Prix victory in China earlier this year. These comparisons have only grown as Antonelli's form has continued to sparkle throughout the season.

Rosberg, speaking to Sky Sports Germany, expressed his admiration for both Antonelli and Verstappen. "Max Verstappen is still the best driver in the sport," Rosberg stated, noting the Dutchman's recent string of victories, including a notable win in Singapore. Rosberg also praised Antonelli, describing him as a 'phenomenon' and acknowledging the young Italian's unexpected rise this year, which Rosberg likened to 'Michael Schumacher-level' performances.

Rosberg's insight is particularly informed by his own experiences, having been Schumacher's teammate at Mercedes during the latter's return to F1. This background gives his praise for Antonelli's Schumacher-like qualities added weight. Yet, despite Antonelli's achievements and the potential to become the youngest-ever world champion at 20, Rosberg maintains that Verstappen holds the benchmark position.

Alessandro Benetton, former chairman of the Benetton F1 team, echoes Rosberg's sentiments. He sees shades of Schumacher in Antonelli's driving. Schumacher, who began his F1 career with Benetton, won two world championships with them before moving to Ferrari.

As the 2026 season heads into its final stretch, all eyes will be on whether Antonelli can secure his first world championship and how Verstappen will fare in the remaining races. For now, the debate over who is truly the best driver on the grid continues, with Rosberg's endorsement of Verstappen adding another layer to the discussion.
