Nikola Tsolov's Journey from F2 Leader to F1 Aspirant with Red Bull's Backing
Nikola Tsolov is making waves in Formula 2, leading the championship and attracting F1 interest. Backed by Red Bull, he's navigating the speculation with a cool head and a focus on performance.
Nikola Tsolov is having quite the year, leading the Formula 2 championship and stirring up conversations about a potential Formula 1 seat by 2027. The Bulgarian driver, part of the Red Bull Junior Team, is handling the buzz around his future with the composure of someone beyond his years.
With the 2026 season on a summer break, the anticipation for next year’s lineup is only intensifying. Tsolov, who has been a standout performer this season, has already bagged six race wins, including a clean sweep at Silverstone. This has inevitably fueled the chatter about his prospects in F1.
"I've been trying to keep my distance from all the noise," Tsolov explains. "It's easy to get distracted, but I'm staying focused because I expected some attention. It’s been a great season, and I believe there's more we can achieve."
Tsolov's switch to the Red Bull program in 2025 seems to have paid off, as he found a new level of consistency and performance. Having previously competed against other F1 hopefuls, he now appreciates the support and development he receives from Red Bull, which he credits for his current form.
"Red Bull has a fantastic track record with young drivers," Tsolov notes. "Their support has been crucial, both on and off the track. I've grown a lot since joining them, and it feels like I'm in the best possible place."
His current team, Campos Racing, has also been vocal about his potential. Team Principal Adrian Campos believes Tsolov deserves a spot in F1, mirroring Tsolov's sentiments of a strong team environment contributing to his success.
Tsolov's journey in single-seaters began at age 16 in Formula 3, making him one of the younger drivers in the series. Now at 19, he combines youth with a wealth of experience, which he sees as a significant advantage.
"I might be young, but I've gathered a lot of experience," he reflects. "That combination is powerful and helps me stand out."
His F2 debut in 2025 was a learning curve, notably alongside Arvid Lindblad, who is now with Racing Bulls. These early experiences helped Tsolov adapt quickly to the demands of F2.
"Racing with Arvid was pivotal," Tsolov says. "He already had F1 experience, and learning from him was invaluable."
As the F2 season progresses, Tsolov remains at the top of the standings, maintaining a 20-point lead. He stays grounded despite the growing speculation about his F1 future, understanding that performance is the key factor.
"Red Bull is happy with my progress, but nothing is confirmed," Tsolov adds. "I need to keep delivering results in F2, as that's what will help me climb the ladder."
For now, the focus remains on completing a successful F2 season, but with Red Bull's backing and his impressive form, Tsolov is certainly one to watch as he eyes the next step toward Formula 1.
