Norris Apologizes to McLaren After Singapore Sprint Clash with Teammate Piastri

Lando Norris has issued an apology to McLaren following a final lap collision with Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Sprint. The incident, deemed a racing incident, left McLaren disappointed despite Norris recovering to finish eighth.

Lando Norris found himself in a reflective mood following the Singapore Sprint, where a late-race clash with teammate Oscar Piastri cast a shadow over McLaren's weekend. The reigning World Champion admitted his mistake, stating, "I let down the team," after diving inside Piastri on the final lap of the 100km sprint around Marina Bay. Both drivers spun at Turn 5, with Norris managing to recover to eighth place, while Piastri retired from the race.

Initially defiant, Norris insisted after the Sprint that the gap was there for the taking. However, by the end of Sunday's Grand Prix, he had softened his stance, acknowledging his role in the incident. The stewards labeled it a racing incident, yet McLaren's Team Principal, Andrea Stella, was left less than impressed. "I can't attempt what I did, even if the move was on," Norris conceded. "I should have been more mindful of the team. It was a mistake, and I've apologized to everyone involved."

The Grand Prix saw Norris finish fourth, a position he reached after overtaking Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. Meanwhile, Piastri, having suffered a puncture, ended up right behind his teammate, thanks to a late-race move. During the race, Norris inquired over the radio if he could assist Piastri, who was struggling after the extra pit stop. "Oscar was unlucky with the puncture," Norris explained. "I had my own car issues, so I thought helping Oscar gain more points was the better strategy."

Despite the intra-team drama, Norris was pragmatic about McLaren's current standing, noting their slip to the back of the top four in the championship. "We did what we could," he summarized, hopeful that both he and Piastri can rebound in future races.
