Oscar Piastri admits he's still not comfortable with McLaren's MCL40, noting that no 'magic answers' will solve the issues this season. Despite some personal progress, McLaren's performance remains inconsistent and challenging.
Oscar Piastri, now in his fourth season with McLaren, has offered a candid assessment of the challenges he faces with the team's current car, the MCL40. Despite McLaren sitting third in the Constructors' Championship, the Australian driver concedes that comfort with the car remains elusive.
McLaren's campaign has been less than ideal, with the team securing only two victories this season thanks to Lando Norris's wins in Hungary and the Netherlands. Norris, the reigning world champion, finds himself trailing Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli by a significant margin and needs to close the gap to stay in contention.
Piastri, meanwhile, has had a rocky start to the season, missing out on points in Australia and Japan due to non-starts. Although he managed to reach the podium in China and Miami, those moments of celebration have been rare. The MCL40's tricky handling has forced both Piastri and Norris to adapt their driving styles.
In a recent interview, Piastri acknowledged the limitations of the car, saying, "I think in the short term, it’s probably as good as it’s going to get." He noted that while adapting his driving style has brought some improvement, he doesn't expect any 'magic answers' to transform the car's performance this year.
The differences in car setup and tyre performance have contributed to McLaren's struggles. Piastri pointed out that while trying to drive differently has become more natural over time, achieving the desired comfort level with the MCL40 remains a challenge. He added, "The cars themselves are very different. The tyres are quite different as well, so that’s not going to change anytime soon."
Piastri also dismissed the idea that Pirelli tyres are the primary factor affecting their performance, although he admitted, "If I knew, I’d be a much happier person." He acknowledged Mercedes' strength, particularly their confidence in cornering, as something McLaren envies.
Despite the difficulties, McLaren is pushing forward with updates to the MCL40. Team principal Andrea Stella emphasized that the team's focus is on fundamental concepts that will influence next year's car. "We do plan to deliver some upgrades. We hope that they will be able to fill this gap that we have to the best cars and put McLaren in condition to fight for podiums on merit," Stella said.
The upgrades are expected to roll out in phases, with hopes that they will bolster McLaren's competitiveness in the latter stages of the season. As McLaren continues to grapple with the MCL40's intricacies, Piastri remains hopeful for personal progress, even if the car itself presents ongoing challenges.
