Lando Norris admits he must prioritize McLaren's interests after a clash with teammate Oscar Piastri in Singapore. Despite the incident, McLaren maintains a united front as they strategize for future races.
Lando Norris has acknowledged the need to prioritize McLaren over personal ambitions following a recent on-track clash with teammate Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Grand Prix Sprint. The reigning world champion's attempt to overtake Piastri at Turn 5 resulted in both cars spinning, with Piastri forced to retire and Norris finishing in eighth place.
After the incident, Norris expressed his regrets and emphasized the importance of putting the team's interests first. "I can't attempt what I did. I should never have tried it, even if it looked possible," Norris admitted. "I've got to think more about the team that I represent more than myself." He has since apologized to the team and pledged to improve his decision-making in future races.
Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal, confirmed that discussions within the team are ongoing to ensure a cohesive approach moving forward. Despite the setback, Norris demonstrated his commitment to team strategy during the Grand Prix by offering to assist Piastri's overtaking efforts. Although McLaren did not act on Norris's suggestion to hold back Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari, Piastri still finished fifth, just behind Norris.
Reflecting on the race, Norris noted his eagerness to aid Piastri, particularly as a puncture had hampered the Australian's race. "I also had a few problems with the car myself, so there was more of an opportunity to get more points and get Oscar back up the order," Norris explained.
With McLaren sitting third in the Constructors' standings and Red Bull closing in, the team is focused on maintaining their position as they head to Austin. The Singapore incident has underscored the importance of unity and strategy for McLaren as they navigate the challenges of the 2026 season.
