Rafael Camara, set to join Haas in 2027, has revealed his preferred driver number for his rookie F1 season. The Brazilian aims to use the number 50, inspired by his birth date.
Rafael Camara, the latest addition to Haas, has picked the driver number he hopes to use when he steps into Formula 1 in 2027. After his promotion from Formula 2, where he's currently leading the standings, Camara is eyeing the number 50 for his rookie season. This choice is a nod to his birthday, May 5, 2005, although it won't be officially confirmed until the FIA releases the entry list.
Camara initially preferred the number 5, but that option is taken by Gabriel Bortoleto. "I think we'll be using the number 50," Camara explained, "It's 50 because basically my birthday is 05/05/2005. I spoke with my dad and then he said it's 50, it makes sense with the birthday date, so I'll be using that one for next year."
Haas is no stranger to the number 50, having used it in past FP1 sessions with reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa and likely 2027 teammate Ollie Bearman during his substitute appearances in 2024.
Camara secured his seat at Haas after impressing in a testing session for previous cars at Portugal’s Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, where he went head-to-head with Hirakawa. His performance caught the eye of Team Principal Ayao Komatsu, leading to his full-time opportunity.
Reflecting on the test, Camara noted, "It was a very intense two days. You knew that it was going to be important, the test, and you need to deliver in a way. You need to perform these two days with a new track, new car, and a new team. I just tried to learn everything and put it in place. There was also a huge amount of pressure, so I was really trying to focus, enjoy it, and make the most of the moment, and I think I was happy with the job I did in the end. I was happy with myself."
Camara's efforts paid off, as he received a call from Komatsu while in Milan confirming his place on the team. "I got a call from Ayao in Milan about the seat," Camara said, "and then the first thing I said to him was, ‘Are you sure?’ Obviously, I was very happy with that. Just super excited, and then I went to tell my parents – they also were staying – and I could tell them in person, [have a] good hug."
The Brazilian driver expressed gratitude for his parents' support, acknowledging the sacrifices they made to help him pursue his passion for motorsport. "I’m extremely happy, especially for my parents. There’s a lot of sacrifice on their side and making something that was a passion of a kid, and we are also not even from the motorsport world. We didn’t really know exactly what was the way to go to be here, so very proud of being here today, and I’m just enjoying the moment."
