Red Bull's Resurgence: How Verstappen and Mekies Steered the Team Back on Track

Red Bull Racing has bounced back spectacularly, with Max Verstappen leading the charge after a challenging start to the season. Team Principal Laurent Mekies has played a pivotal role in this transformation, securing Verstappen's long-term commitment.

In a recent episode of the podcast _F1 Nation_, hosts Jolyon Palmer and Alex Jacques explored Red Bull Racing's impressive comeback, particularly focusing on the role of Max Verstappen and team principal Laurent Mekies. Just a few months back, the team seemed to be on shaky ground, struggling to adapt to new regulations and trailing behind rivals like Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren. However, things have turned around dramatically, with Verstappen now firmly committed to Red Bull until 2030.

Verstappen's recent victories in Malaysia and Singapore have not only rejuvenated his season but have also positioned him as a strong contender for a P2 finish in the overall standings. Palmer noted that the weaknesses previously associated with Red Bull's car seem to have vanished. "They're good at kerb riding," he remarked, highlighting the team's progress in addressing mechanical issues like downshifts that once plagued Verstappen in Singapore.

Alex Jacques added that the car's updates have unlocked its potential, particularly in terms of balance. This newfound harmony between driver and machine has given Verstappen the confidence to perform at his best. "He's finished a tenth away in Baku and has been winning consistently since," Jacques pointed out, emphasizing Verstappen's impressive form even when the car wasn't the fastest on the grid.

The transformation at Red Bull has drawn comparisons to McLaren's successful seasons in 2024 and 2025. Yet, Palmer argued that Red Bull's resurgence is even more remarkable, having overcome steeper challenges. Verstappen, who was once 113 points behind Kimi Antonelli, has managed to close that gap significantly over the past 11 races. Palmer expressed that if the championship had started after Monaco, Verstappen would likely be leading it.

One key factor in Verstappen's decision to stay with Red Bull is his strong relationship with Mekies. Mekies, who has extended his contract until 2031, has been a stabilizing force for the team, taking over from Christian Horner during a turbulent period. Palmer praised Mekies for his ability to galvanize the team and maintain focus on winning races, even when things could have easily spiraled out of control.

Jacques highlighted Mekies' psychological impact on the team, reminding them of their capabilities and stature in Formula 1. His leadership has ensured that Verstappen remains committed, preventing a potential exodus that could have severely impacted the team.

Red Bull's upward trajectory and Verstappen's return to form were among the key discussions in the _F1 Nation_ podcast's United States Grand Prix preview. Fans can listen to the full episode for more insights into the team's strategy and future prospects.
