Red Bull's Verstappen Praises New Engineer’s Debut in Austin

Max Verstappen's new race engineer, Tom Hart, received high praise from Red Bull principal Laurent Mekies after their first race together in Austin. Mekies was impressed with Hart's ability to handle the challenging conditions and is confident in his future with the team.

Max Verstappen took to the track in Austin with a new voice in his ear. Tom Hart stepped up as race engineer for the Red Bull star, marking the beginning of a transition period as Verstappen’s long-time engineer, GianPiero Lambiase, prepares to leave for a role at McLaren by 2028.

Red Bull's team principal, Laurent Mekies, was full of praise for Hart’s debut performance. Despite dealing with radio issues during the race, the duo managed to secure a third-place finish. Mekies likened the established rapport between Verstappen and Lambiase to an 'old married couple,' a partnership that began when Verstappen joined Red Bull in 2016. With Lambiase set to become McLaren's chief racing officer, Hart is stepping in to fill some big shoes.

Mekies acknowledged the challenge of a first race, particularly one as complex as Austin, and commended Hart's ability to navigate the pressures effectively. "He did an excellent job," Mekies stated, noting that Hart successfully coordinated the engineering team's efforts to support Verstappen. Though the team might have hoped for a better result than third place, Mekies found the outcome promising.

Looking forward, Mekies confirmed that Hart will alternate with Lambiase for the rest of the season. "You cannot recreate a relationship in no time," Mekies said, expressing confidence that Hart and Verstappen will develop a strong dynamic over time. This plan will see both engineers working with Verstappen, alongside other team considerations like FP1 drivers.

The weekend in Austin was a taste of what's to come for Verstappen and Hart as they embark on this new chapter, with Mekies backing Hart to rise to the challenge.
