Russell Leads FP3 at Monza with Hamilton and Verstappen Chasing
George Russell set the fastest time in the final practice session at the Italian Grand Prix, edging out Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. The session featured a mix of traffic challenges and minor incidents, setting the stage for an intriguing qualifying session.
In an engaging final practice session at the Italian Grand Prix, George Russell seized the top spot on the timesheets. The Mercedes driver clocked a 1m 22.219s, outpacing Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
Russell's performance continued his strong form from Friday, where he also led second practice. Saturday's session began quietly, with Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg initially having the track to themselves before Alpine drivers joined the fray.
Williams' Alex Albon reported an early issue with his steering wheel, but after a brief pit stop, he rejoined the action as the track became busier. Pierre Gasly initially set the fastest time, but it was Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli who soon topped the charts with a 1m 23.032s lap, despite knowing he'd start from the back due to an engine change penalty.
The session wasn't without its hiccups. Liam Lawson spun at the first chicane, citing trouble with his car's rear stability. Meanwhile, Albon received a warning for not adhering to race director instructions, and Oscar Piastri humorously commented on his own lock-up into the first corner.
As the hour progressed, Russell went quickest with a 1m 22.697s, despite having to navigate through traffic, voicing his frustrations over the radio. The final minutes saw a flurry of activity as drivers bolted on fresh soft tyres, with Russell ultimately securing the fastest lap.
Elsewhere, Williams executed a tow strategy with Albon helping Carlos Sainz, as both drivers prepare for penalties that will see them start from the back. They, along with others, will be scrutinized for possible yellow flag violations.
Verstappen expressed his displeasure with traffic, particularly a Ferrari he felt was overly obstructive. A spirited moment between Hamilton and Verstappen saw them go side-by-side down the main straight, leading to mutual radio complaints, though stewards opted not to investigate.
Russell's time held firm, with Hamilton and Verstappen completing the top three. Antonelli finished fourth, followed by McLaren's Lando Norris. The session concluded with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in sixth, and the likes of Arvid Lindblad, Piastri, Gasly, and Franco Colapinto rounding out the top ten.
As the teams shift focus to qualifying, the paddock at Monza is buzzing with anticipation for the sessions ahead.
