Tom Cruise's High-Speed Love Affair with Formula 1

Tom Cruise's passion for racing isn't just cinematic — he's lived it on the track with Red Bull Racing. His involvement in the sport spans from driving an F1 car to making appearances at Grand Prix events.

Tom Cruise may have gained fame as a racing driver in _Days of Thunder_, but his real-life experiences on the track have fueled an enduring love for Formula 1. Back in 2011, long before his latest movie _Digger_ hit the screens, Cruise swapped his Hollywood set for the racetrack, getting behind the wheel of a Red Bull Racing F1 car.

Cruise's fascination with racing can be traced back to the late 1980s, influenced by his _The Colour of Money_ co-star, Paul Newman. He tried his hand at professional racing with the Newman/Sharp Racing team, but his aggressive driving style led him to retire his racing helmet early. Nevertheless, his passion for speed never waned.

An F1 Experience Like No Other

Fifteen years ago, Red Bull Racing extended an extraordinary invitation to Cruise, allowing him to test one of their Formula 1 cars. This opportunity came during a break from post-production on a _Mission Impossible_ film. Under the guidance of David Coulthard, a former Red Bull driver and Grand Prix winner, Cruise found himself at Willow Springs International Raceway in California.

Before taking control of the 850-horsepower beast, Cruise and Coulthard familiarized themselves with the circuit. The actor then suited up, climbing into the F1 car for 24 laps. Despite a few off-track moments, Cruise quickly adapted, shaving a remarkable 11 seconds off his lap time from start to finish. When not on the track, he was in the sky with Red Bull's stunt helicopter team, proving his appetite for adrenaline extends beyond the ground.

Red Carpets and Race Tracks

Cruise's support for F1 extends to its cinematic ventures as well. He was a prominent figure on the red carpet for the premiere of _F1 The Movie_, alongside former co-star Brad Pitt. The film's director, Joseph Kosinski, has collaborated with Cruise on other projects, like _Oblivion_ and _Top Gun: Maverick_. Cruise took to Instagram to commend the film's creators, sharing his enthusiasm for the intersection of film and motorsport.

A Regular on the F1 Scene

Known for his action-packed roles, Cruise has also been a familiar face at F1 events, including a memorable appearance at the 2022 British Grand Prix. Celebrating his 60th birthday that weekend, he was spotted under the podium with Anthony Hamilton and Antonio Perez, mingling with the likes of Sir Jackie Stewart and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. Cruise even made it onto Martin Brundle’s grid walk, demonstrating his genuine interest in the sport.

In 2023, Cruise attended the Miami Grand Prix with Shakira, where he assisted the Mercedes team with pit stop practice. His appearances aren't just limited to the track; from life in the cockpit to mingling in the paddock, Cruise's connection to F1 remains strong.

As _Digger_ graces cinemas, Cruise's journey from Hollywood to the high-speed world of Formula 1 continues to captivate. His involvement over the years is a testament to his enduring enthusiasm for the sport, proving that whether he's on the big screen or at the racetrack, Cruise's love for speed is undeniable.
