Williams Channels 1981 Glory with Special Livery for Madrid GP

Williams is taking a nostalgic turn at the Spanish Grand Prix by unveiling a special livery inspired by their 1981 championship-winning car, the FW07C. This design will be featured on the cars of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon as Formula 1 returns to Madrid, a city that last hosted a Grand Prix back in 1981.

The livery, a blend of white, green, and navy blue, pays tribute to the era when Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann raced at the Circuito de Jarama. "From the engineers who developed the FW07C to the team preparing the FW48, the same spirit of innovation, precision, and teamwork continues to shape Williams," the team remarked. This nod to the past aims to inspire their current efforts to climb back up the grid.

Unveiled during a Fan Zone event in Madrid's Plaza De Callao, the livery connects Williams' historic success with their current ambitions. Team Principal James Vowles expressed his pride in celebrating the team’s legacy through this special design, courtesy of title sponsor Atlassian. "The car looks fantastic," Vowles said, "and I cannot wait to see it lapping around Madrid."

For Carlos Sainz, this Grand Prix carries personal significance as it marks his first race in his hometown of Madrid. Sainz and Albon will be looking to end the team's point drought, which stretches back to Albon's eighth-place finish in Monaco eight races ago. Williams, who finished fifth in the championship last year, currently find themselves ninth, trailing Audi by five points.
