Yuki Tsunoda Reignites F1 Hopes with Strong Zandvoort Performance
Yuki Tsunoda's one-off appearance at the Dutch Grand Prix saw him finish a commendable P11, reviving interest in his F1 career. Despite a challenging season with Red Bull in 2025, his performance with Racing Bulls in an unfamiliar car has reignited his prospects.
Yuki Tsunoda made waves at Zandvoort with a noteworthy performance for Racing Bulls, finishing just outside the points in P11. Though he didn’t score, he managed to remind the F1 paddock of his capabilities in a single weekend. After a rocky stint with Red Bull last year, Tsunoda was largely absent from the race scene since December, but his recent outing could change that.
The Dutch Grand Prix was a chance for Tsunoda to reestablish himself, especially since he hadn’t raced competitively for months. Despite this, he showed no signs of rust, thanks to keeping sharp with Red Bull simulations and testing. His last-minute call-up meant limited practice in the Racing Bulls VCARB 03 simulator, but he adapted quickly. During FP1 and Sprint Qualifying, he showed promise, narrowly missing out on his teammate Liam Lawson's times.
Tsunoda's weekend was characterized by a steady climb in confidence. By the time he reached Qualifying, he managed to reduce the gap to his teammate Arvid Lindblad to just 0.102s, a testament to his adaptability and skill. "Honestly, I'm super happy," Tsunoda remarked, expressing his joy at being back in the thick of competition, even if the learning curve was steep.
His competitive edge was clear when he battled against former teammate Pierre Gasly during the race. Despite some strategic maneuvers by Lindblad to aid Tsunoda, Gasly eventually secured the last point in P10. Still, Tsunoda saw the weekend as a success, proving that with minimal preparation, he could compete with the best.
Racing Bulls had their own challenges, including penalties for drivers passing under yellow flags, which reshuffled their strategy against rivals Alpine. Tsunoda’s solid performance was a small victory amidst these setbacks.
Even without a seat for the next season, Tsunoda's display at Zandvoort has placed him back into conversations for future opportunities. "I know what I can do," he confidently stated, aware that his performance had caught the attention of the paddock.
For now, Tsunoda's future remains uncertain, but his performance has certainly put him back in the mix. Whether or not he lands a seat next year, his message is clear: don't count him out just yet.
