Despite a rocky start at Aston Martin, Adrian Newey is expected to guide the team to success. Jock Clear sees parallels with Newey's early Red Bull days.
Adrian Newey, now at the helm of Aston Martin, comes with high expectations. The former Red Bull technical genius and his new team have struggled in the 2026 season, with just seven points over 17 races. Yet, Jock Clear, a seasoned engineer who has worked with Williams, Mercedes, and Ferrari, remains optimistic about Newey's potential impact on Aston Martin's fortunes.
Clear draws a parallel between Newey's current situation and his initial years at Red Bull, where success didn't come instantly. He reminds us that Newey's journey at Red Bull started similarly bumpy, taking until 2009 for a breakthrough. According to Clear, the "raw ingredients" for success at Aston Martin are present, but patience is crucial.
Newey has acknowledged the troubles with the 2026 car, which was delayed in its development process, only hitting the wind tunnel in April 2025, much later than competitors. However, he has promised that the team won't repeat these missteps in future seasons.
In an interview with PlanetF1.com, Clear highlighted the challenges of succeeding in F1, even for a talent like Newey. He remains confident that Newey and Aston Martin will make "steps" forward over the coming years, though reaching the pinnacle remains uncertain.
Adrian Newey's role as team principal is his first major management position in F1. He is expected to eventually step down, with Jonathan Wheatley, formerly of Audi F1, identified as his potential successor. Newey and Wheatley have a history of collaboration from their Red Bull days.
Clear also commented on the recent trend of engineers transitioning to team principal roles, citing Andrea Stella at McLaren and James Vowles at Williams as examples of technical minds thriving in leadership positions. He notes that the additional skills required of a team principal are crucial in successfully steering a team.
While Aston Martin's 2026 season might not have gone to plan, the presence of Newey and Clear’s faith suggest that the team might just be warming up for a future push to the top.
