Alan Permane on Liam Lawson's Rebuilding Journey After Red Bull Setback

Alan Permane, Team Principal, recently shared insights on Liam Lawson's experience after his short-lived stint at Red Bull. Lawson, who had a brief and challenging time with the top team in 2025, returned to Racing Bulls with a noticeable dip in confidence. According to Permane, Lawson initially kept his feelings to himself, but it was evident to those familiar with him that he wasn't quite the same.
Lawson's opportunity at Red Bull came after he impressed as a stand-in for Racing Bulls' Daniel Ricciardo in 2023, eventually securing a promotion to race alongside Max Verstappen. However, a tough start to the 2025 season, marked by a crash in Australia and poor qualifying in China, led to his quick return to Racing Bulls.
Speaking on the _Beyond The Grid_ podcast, Permane noted, "He didn't really say much to start with, honestly. His head was down. He won't thank me for this, but you could tell he wasn't the same guy." Permane emphasized that while they didn't 'rebuild' Lawson, they provided support to help him regain his footing.
Lawson worked tirelessly both on and off track, particularly in the simulator, and slowly regained his form. Permane advised him to ignore distractions and focus solely on racing, advice that Lawson took to heart. This renewed focus has reflected in his performances this year, as Lawson has shown improved synergy with his engineering team and a better understanding of what he needs from the car.
Now racing alongside rookie Arvid Lindblad, Lawson has embraced his role as the more seasoned driver, helping Racing Bulls in their tight midfield contest with Alpine. His efforts have been fruitful, contributing 39 points so far this season, surpassing his total from 2025.
Permane praised Lawson's adaptability, noting that the best drivers adjust their style to the car's needs rather than sticking to one approach. "I think Liam is doing a bit of that this year," he observed, highlighting Lawson's ability to concentrate on driving without external distractions.
