Button and Chandhok Weigh In on Verstappen's Singapore Incident

Jenson Button and Karun Chandhok have voiced their support for Max Verstappen's anticipated defense regarding a yellow flag incident during Singapore's sprint qualifying. The incident may see Verstappen facing a penalty, but both pundits agree he has a reasonable explanation.

During the Singapore Grand Prix's sprint qualifying, Max Verstappen found himself under scrutiny for allegedly overtaking Lewis Hamilton under yellow flag conditions. The Dutchman did manage to secure pole position with a stellar lap, but the potential infringement cast a shadow over his achievement. Yellow flags were waving, indicating that overtaking was prohibited, yet Verstappen passed the slow-moving Hamilton. This action prompted a visit to the stewards' room, where Verstappen's defense might hinge on an interesting point raised by Jenson Button and Karun Chandhok.

Both Button and Chandhok, speaking on Sky Sports F1, suggested that Verstappen could argue Hamilton intentionally moved aside, allowing him to pass. Button noted, "Lewis has backed off and pulled over to let him past obviously, because he was on a slow lap." Chandhok concurred, adding, "Lewis has moved off line to the middle of the track and allowed Max past, so that's probably going to be the defense." They both acknowledged that while Hamilton did make room, Verstappen should have been aware of the yellow flags.

Chandhok also mentioned that according to the FIA guidelines, overtaking under single yellow flags typically results in a five-place grid penalty during qualifying. However, he pointed out that the stewards have some discretion and might consider the context of the situation. If Verstappen receives a grid penalty, he might start sixth, a position that could feel harsh given the circumstances.

The incident adds an extra layer of intrigue to Verstappen's attempt at claiming his first win in Singapore, albeit in the sprint format. As the stewards deliberate, the Formula 1 community awaits their decision, with Button and Chandhok's insights providing a nuanced perspective on a contentious moment.
