Daniel Ricciardo admits that Red Bull's decision to end his F1 career was a blessing in disguise, as he struggled to make the decision himself. Despite feelings of failure, Ricciardo has found new purpose beyond the track.
Daniel Ricciardo has opened up about his departure from Formula 1, candidly admitting that Red Bull's decision to let him go was ultimately beneficial. In a revealing interview on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Ricciardo shared how he grappled with feelings of humiliation and failure after his exit following the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.
Ricciardo, who had returned to the Red Bull fold after a challenging stint with McLaren, was given a seat at AlphaTauri midway through 2023, replacing Nyck de Vries. The hope was for Ricciardo to regain his form and challenge Sergio Perez for a spot alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull. However, his performance fell short with only three top-ten finishes in 18 races. Red Bull decided to end his season early, allowing them to evaluate Liam Lawson as Verstappen's potential teammate.
Reflecting on his career, Ricciardo revealed his internal conflict about continuing in F1. "In hindsight, I realize I might not have been able to step away on my own. I had moments, like after the Monaco 2022 race, where I felt done, but the reality is, would I have walked away?" he pondered. Encouragement from those around him often drowned out his own doubts, making it difficult to make a clean break.
Despite the difficult end to his F1 journey, Ricciardo acknowledges a sense of gratitude towards Red Bull for making the decision for him. "I still don't like how it ended, but I'm grateful they pulled the trigger," he said. Yet, the aftermath wasn't easy. Ricciardo described the period following his exit as one filled with self-doubt and a sense of failure. "You build a certain ruthlessness in racing, but it turns inward. Not performing as expected felt like a personal failure," he admitted.
Public appearances masked his internal struggles, as Ricciardo tried to hide his true feelings of pain and sadness. "I was just hiding from the humiliation," he confessed, recalling how he once aspired to fight for world titles but now faced the reality of life after F1.
Two years have passed since leaving the sport, and Ricciardo has redefined his sense of purpose. "Finding a purpose is still important, but it doesn't have to be a massive mountain to climb," he shared. Ricciardo acknowledges that some days are aimless, but he emphasizes the importance of having small, meaningful tasks.
Now, Ricciardo channels his energy into roles beyond racing, including being a global ambassador for Ford and managing his clothing line, Enchanté. These ventures help him maintain a sense of purpose and keep him engaged in life beyond the racetrack.
