Nikola Tsolov, a Red Bull academy driver, is making waves in Formula 2 and catching the eye of David Coulthard. Coulthard draws parallels between Tsolov and former F1 champions, adding intrigue to the battle for a Racing Bulls seat.
David Coulthard has been drawing attention to Nikola Tsolov, a rising star in the Red Bull driver academy, as he competes with Liam Lawson for a coveted seat at Racing Bulls in 2027. Tsolov is currently in a tight battle with Rafael Camara for the Formula 2 title, trailing by a mere seven points with just two rounds left. His impressive performance has positioned him as a strong contender for a Formula 1 spot next year. Despite Lawson's solid run with Racing Bulls in 2026, his future remains uncertain as the team considers promoting Tsolov to partner with Arvid Lindblad.
Coulthard has been vocal about Tsolov's potential, even comparing him to the likes of James Hunt and Gerhard Berger. On the 'Up To Speed' podcast, Coulthard noted, "Lawson has certainly found his stride, especially after stepping in for Isack Hadjar at the senior team. But Tsolov, with his multiple F2 victories, has the flair and charisma reminiscent of Hunt and Berger." While Coulthard supports keeping Lawson, he acknowledges Tsolov's promising future, suggesting that the Bulgarian might have to bide his time and learn before stepping onto the F1 grid.
With Red Bull yet to make a final decision, Tsolov's path could lead him to a reserve role at Racing Bulls or even a stint in Super Formula for 2027. The decision will likely hinge on Lawson's performance and Red Bull's long-term strategy. For now, Tsolov remains a key figure to watch as the F1 grid evolves.
