David Coulthard Speculates on Hamilton's Decision to Ignore Ferrari's Pit Call in Singapore

During the Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton chose not to follow Ferrari's suggestion for a second pit stop under virtual safety car conditions, a decision that surprised many. David Coulthard believes this choice was influenced by Hamilton's concerns about losing time in a double-stack pit stop.

In the Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton defied Ferrari's strategy by staying out on track when the team suggested a second pit stop under virtual safety car conditions. This decision, made after Lance Stroll's retirement neutralized the race, was unexpected and ultimately shifted Hamilton's race outcome. While the move gained him track position over his teammate Charles Leclerc, it likely cost him three places by the end.

David Coulthard, offering his analysis, speculated that Hamilton was worried about losing time due to a double-stack pit stop scenario. Ferrari's call came as Hamilton was losing grip on his soft tires, which had already been pitted for earlier than most. Despite his initial track advantage, Hamilton's decision saw him eventually fall behind Leclerc, Kimi Antonelli, and both McLarens, resulting in a sixth-place finish.

Hamilton, who skipped post-race interviews due to illness, admitted to the misstep in his strategy, raising questions about Ferrari's role in the tactical decision-making. Coulthard, speaking to Channel 4, pointed out the questionable strategic calls by Ferrari, including the initial tire choices that put Hamilton on softs and Leclerc on mediums.

Hamilton's radio messages during the virtual safety car period weren't fully broadcast, adding to the confusion. However, onboard footage from Leclerc's pit stop indicated that both drivers could have been serviced simultaneously, as mechanics were prepared with two sets of tires. Despite this, Hamilton drove past the pit lane, prioritizing his concerns over potential time loss.

Coulthard suggested that Hamilton, focused on the immediate gap to the cars behind, was more concerned with losing time than gaining a strategic edge. His decision not to pit, despite being five seconds clear of Antonelli, left him vulnerable as his tires wore down.

While Hamilton has acknowledged his role in the call, the episode has sparked debate over Ferrari's communication and strategy execution. With the pit wall having the broader race picture, questions linger about whether Hamilton was fully informed of the implications of his choice.
