F3 Drivers Test the Unique Madring Circuit Ahead of Spanish Grand Prix
F3 drivers recently had their first taste of Madrid's new Madring circuit, which will soon host the Spanish Grand Prix. The track's mix of permanent sections and public roads, including a distinctive banked turn, promises a unique challenge.
The Madring circuit in Madrid has recently played host to an in-season F3 test, offering a sneak peek at the venue that will soon welcome the Spanish Grand Prix. This test marked the first time the 30 F3 drivers have tackled the new track, giving both them and the circuit a preliminary shakedown before the big event in mid-September.
The Madring is a fascinating blend of permanent track segments and public roads, with an eye-catching feature in the form of a banked turn named 'La Monumental.' This combination is set to provide a distinctive challenge when Formula 1 arrives for the 14th round of the 2026 season, alongside F2 and F3 support races.
Carlos Sainz, the local hero, had the honor of completing the first laps at Madring earlier in the year, and Ferrari recently got in on the action too, using a filming day to put an F1 car through its paces on the new circuit.
Freddie Slater, an Audi junior driver currently leading the F3 championship by eight points, shared his excitement about the track. "This track is incredible to drive," he enthused. "It's a bit old-school, with some interesting corners and a lot of character. It's probably one of the most enjoyable on a push lap on the calendar."
Slater, who has already experienced street circuits like Macau and Monaco, appreciates the unique demands of Madring. "I love the whole thing," he said. "It's one of the best tracks I've driven. Like all the best tracks, those with character like Macau and Monaco, that's the special thing here."
While Slater couldn't pick a single favorite part, he did highlight the Turn 5 and 6 chicane as particularly enjoyable. "I'm just enjoying it, having fun," he added.
