Ferrari Halts Turbocharger Upgrade Amid Reliability Concerns

Ferrari has put a hold on a major turbocharger upgrade for their 2026 F1 engine due to last-minute reliability issues. The Scuderia is now focusing on developing improvements for the 2027 season.

Ferrari has decided to pause an important upgrade to their engine's turbocharger for the 2026 F1 season. The team discovered reliability issues with the new component shortly before it was set to debut. This development comes as Formula 1's new power unit regulations emphasize the importance of engine performance, with a near-equal split between combustion and electrical power.

Drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, along with customer teams Haas and Cadillac, have found themselves at a disadvantage compared to rivals using Mercedes and Red Bull engines. Ferrari's engine has been lacking compared to Red Bull's, which the FIA has recognized as having the most powerful internal combustion engine (ICE).

Ferrari's initial engine upgrade in Austria was a small step toward closing a significant power gap with Mercedes, estimated to be around 25 horsepower. However, the ADUO2 engine introduced in Italy added only a modest 5 horsepower. This shortfall has been attributed in part to the abandonment of the planned turbocharger upgrade.

Engineers, led by technical director Enrico Gualtieri, worked for months on a larger turbocharger, aiming to enhance Ferrari's competitiveness. Yet, just before the Italian Grand Prix, the team decided the new component was too unreliable to use. Instead, they opted to optimize the existing smaller turbocharger.

Looking ahead, Ferrari plans to address these reliability issues and introduce the turbocharger upgrade in 2027. The team is also preparing for future regulatory changes, which will increase the significance of the ICE over the battery in the power unit.

Despite their efforts, Ferrari's hopes for a drivers' championship win in 2026 have dwindled. Mercedes' Andrea Kimi Antonelli is closing in on the title, holding a significant lead over Hamilton, Ferrari's top driver in the standings. Ferrari's focus is now on the 2027 season, aiming to provide their drivers with a competitive engine to challenge for victories.
