Mercedes' reserve driver Fred Vesti reveals the unusual approach that secured his spot in the team's Junior Programme. He remains optimistic about clinching a coveted Formula 1 seat in the future.
In a recent episode of the official _F1 Beyond the Grid_ podcast, Mercedes’ third driver, Fred Vesti, shared the unique story of how he became part of the team's Junior Programme. His journey was far from typical, involving a bit of red-carpet audacity and an unyielding determination to speak with the right people.
Back in 2021, while competing in his second season of Formula 3, Vesti managed to corner Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff at an event in Hockenheim. In a move reminiscent of a tenacious journalist, Vesti stopped Wolff and asked, "How do I become a junior driver with you?" This bold step marked the beginning of his path with Mercedes, a team he saw as a conduit to his Formula 1 dreams.
Vesti explained, "I just had this vision of being a Mercedes Junior, and it could take me all the way to Formula 1." Despite the unconventional approach, Wolff seemed to appreciate Vesti’s passion and drive, qualities that are evidently crucial in the competitive world of F1.
Joining the Mercedes Junior Programme was particularly appealing to Vesti because the team maintained a small roster of drivers, including George Russell, which made the opportunity even more exclusive.
Since signing with the team, Vesti has advanced to the role of reserve driver, participating in FP1 sessions and contributing extensively to simulator work. His position has him collaborating closely with Mercedes’ main drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, each with their unique driving styles. Vesti notes that he has to adapt, balancing the data from both drivers to optimize performance.
Despite his supportive role, Vesti remains steadfast in his pursuit of an F1 seat. At 24, he still harbors the childhood dream of racing in Formula 1 and feels confident about achieving it. "It's a very unforgiving job as third driver," Vesti remarked. "You are helping make champions, but it's not yourself." Yet, he takes comfort in the team's belief in his potential as a future F1 driver.
Vesti's journey with Mercedes, which began with a fortuitous encounter at a party, now sees him deeply immersed in the team's operations. He is fully prepared for the possibility of stepping in for the main drivers if needed, a readiness built over years of rigorous testing and learning.
"I'm working with the best engineers, the best drivers in the world, and I'm really improving rapidly as a driver towards Formula 1," Vesti said, underscoring his commitment. "My dream is to be on the grid, winning races, fighting for championships in Formula 1, and that's what I wake up thinking about every morning."
His determination is palpable, with Vesti expressing a profound belief that his opportunity will come. "I have this feeling so deep in my heart that there is a seat for me," he concluded, emphasizing his readiness to seize any chance that comes his way.
