George Russell Reflects on Challenges with F1 2026 Regulations

George Russell has opened up about the difficulties he's faced adapting to the new F1 regulations, which have impacted his natural driving style. As he navigates a tough season, Russell is focusing on improving consistency rather than overtaking teammate Kimi Antonelli.

George Russell, a familiar face on the F1 circuit since 2019, finds himself grappling with the 2026 season's challenges. Despite being second in the championship standings, his focus is more on the drivers closing in behind him than on catching his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, who is on the brink of claiming his first championship with just a ninth-place finish needed in Mexico.

Russell has identified the changes in F1's power units and tyre pressures as factors that have disrupted his established driving style, leading to a season marked by inconsistency. Once a master of mid-corner momentum, Russell now finds that these new energy-hungry power units are not suited to his approach, which traditionally involved early throttle application. "I think there are just a few factors with the cars this year that potentially favour or hinder a certain driving style," Russell explained. "With these new power units, that means I’m spending more energy, and it’s sometimes not the most efficient way to drive."

Additionally, Pirelli's decision to run high rear tyre pressures has compounded his difficulties. "The tyre pressures this year, especially on the rear, have been very, very high," he noted, adding that this has hindered him further by not allowing the rear tyres to handle the stress of his driving style effectively.

Inconsistency has been the theme of Russell's season. While there have been flashes of brilliance, such as his commanding performance at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, other weekends have been marred by underwhelming results. "If we had the answer, we would be able to maybe replicate it more often," he remarked, reflecting on the mixed bag of results that have left him puzzled.

Russell is no stranger to success; in 2022, he finished in the top five more often than any other driver, despite having the third-best car. This year, however, even with the best car, matching previous results has been elusive. "It's quite strange and certainly scratching our heads a little bit," he admitted.

Looking ahead, Russell is set to spend the winter reassessing his approach, much like Nico Rosberg did in 2015 before winning the championship the following year. However, Russell's focus is not on beating Antonelli but on enhancing his own performance. "I’ve been working with sports psychologists for seven years now," he said, likening his mindset to that of a golfer who competes against their own benchmarks rather than direct rivals.

Russell is determined to keep a level head and not let frustration dictate his actions. "If the frustration starts to creep in and we start acting irrationally with changes, there’s a very high chance you won’t make things better," he cautioned. "The performances are in there. I’ve lost no faith that we can do it because we’ve shown that."

Ultimately, Russell's aim is to understand what differentiates his good performances from the bad ones, ensuring he can replicate success more consistently in the future. As he wraps up a challenging year, he remains committed to solving these issues with his team, maintaining an objective outlook on the path to improvement.
