George Russell's Austin Qualifying: A Tale of One Slide and Lost Momentum

George Russell reflects on a challenging qualifying session in Austin, where a single mistake led to a sixth-place start. Despite his struggles, Russell remains focused on the race ahead.

George Russell will start the United States Grand Prix from sixth on the grid, a disappointing result given his aspirations to challenge his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who secured pole position. The tricky conditions at the Circuit of The Americas seemed to conspire against Russell, who admitted that a single slide during his Q3 lap set off a series of issues.

Russell reflected, "I don't think I could have fought for pole, but I think top three was definitely on the cards for me." He acknowledged that his Q3 performance was hindered by laps that were slower than his Q2 efforts. "I'm not too sure to be honest," he said, summarizing his session as plagued by two subpar laps.

The Briton struggled particularly in the low-speed sections, where his car felt less than cooperative. "Just one slide around Turn 12, and then it was just a snowball. Lost it all in Sector 3, and yeah, simple as that," he mused.

The conditions in Austin added an extra layer of complexity to the session. "The cloud cover was having quite an impact as well," Russell noted. He explained that fluctuating track temperatures, influenced by changing sunlight, played a role in tyre performance, particularly in the final sector.

Looking ahead to the race, Russell was intrigued by Ferrari's unexpected absence from the top three qualifiers, considering they had appeared dominant throughout the weekend. "It will be interesting for the race pace, how that translates," he said, as he turned his focus to making the most of his sixth-place starting position.
