Hamilton Calls for Ferrari Team Talks After Mexico City GP Clash with Leclerc

Lewis Hamilton believes Ferrari missed a chance for a 1-2 finish after a first-lap skirmish with teammate Charles Leclerc. The incident saw Hamilton lose pace and ultimately the lead, prompting calls for internal discussions.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Ferrari’s dynamic duo, found themselves in a spot of bother at the Mexico City Grand Prix. Both were vying for supremacy right from the start, which may have cost Ferrari a shot at a one-two finish. Hamilton, who secured pole position, was poised for a strong race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. However, the opening lap saw him and Leclerc going wheel-to-wheel, resulting in a bit of a mess.

As the race began, Leclerc attempted a bold move on the outside in the braking zone, leading to a side-by-side tussle through the initial corners. Hamilton managed to keep his nose ahead, but both drivers went wide at Turn 4. While Hamilton scrambled to rejoin the track, Leclerc took a scenic route across the grass, seizing the lead from his teammate.

This off-track excursion did not go unnoticed. Leclerc was slapped with a five-second penalty, yet Hamilton's momentum was already compromised. The delay allowed Max Verstappen to swoop past, eventually securing the race win. Leclerc later lost the lead to Verstappen while serving his penalty during a pit stop. A mid-race red flag reshuffled the pack, allowing Hamilton to leapfrog Leclerc, but it was too late to reclaim the top spot.

Hamilton, visibly frustrated, voiced his discontent after the race, suggesting that Ferrari had the potential for a P1 and P2 finish. "I don't really have anything to say about the scenario with Charles. I think you can see what happened and the reason we lost the win," Hamilton said. He noted that a similar incident last year had earned him a 10-second penalty, hinting at inconsistencies in stewarding decisions.

This isn't the first time the pair have clashed this season. Earlier, in China and Italy, their competitive spirit led to on-track skirmishes, with Leclerc even apologizing for forcing Hamilton off the track in Monza.

Looking forward, Hamilton believes it's time for some serious discussions within the team. "Every decision you make in the car impacts all the people that work in the background for the whole team," he reflected. "So, working as a team is a part of our job and a part of our contract. We have to work as a team, which we could have easily done today."

Hamilton emphasized the importance of teamwork, acknowledging the occasional challenges of racing closely with a teammate. "Of course, I've had close battles with teammates in the past, and you can't always get it right, but nine times out of ten we should be able to," he remarked. "So, I think we'll take it offline and we'll have some good conversations, hopefully."

It's clear Hamilton is keen on resolving these issues to prevent them from hindering Ferrari’s progress. As he put it, "For sure, it won't be easy, but it must be done."

With the championship battles heating up, Ferrari will need to ensure their drivers are on the same page to maximize their chances in the remaining races.
