Lewis Hamilton's bid for a front-row start in Singapore faltered at Turn 16, where handling issues derailed his promising pace. Despite a stellar middle sector, Hamilton couldn't prevent Ferrari's Charles Leclerc from claiming second in qualifying.
Lewis Hamilton was on track for a strong qualifying result in Singapore, appearing set for at least a front-row start. However, his hopes took a hit during Q3 at Turn 16, where handling issues arose. Max Verstappen took pole position with a dominant lap, securing his third consecutive top spot in qualifying. Meanwhile, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc surprised many by seizing second place, leaving Hamilton trailing behind.
Alice Powell, providing commentary for BBC Sport, pinpointed Turn 16 as the critical moment where Hamilton's qualifying went awry. "Hamilton had a lot of lock going through Turn 16, and the car bit at the rear," she explained. "It was more understeer through Turn 17 when he applied the throttle. That's where it started to kick out."
Despite the setback, Hamilton shone in the second sector of the Singapore street circuit. Powell praised his performance, noting, "Hamilton has something in the middle sector that no one else can even match." His second sector time of 38.258 seconds was the fastest in Q3, underscoring his potential if he can resolve the issues in the problematic turns.
If Hamilton can fine-tune his approach to Turns 16 and 17, he could pose a significant threat to Verstappen when the race begins. Ferrari also has promising pace, and a quick start could see them challenge for victory at Marina Bay.
