Nico Hulkenberg delivered a standout performance at the Singapore Grand Prix, finishing eighth and securing his highest points of the season. His strategic driving and defense against George Russell were key to his success.
Nico Hulkenberg delivered a standout performance in Singapore, capping off what was arguably his best weekend of the 2026 season. After a solid seventh-place finish in the Sprint, he fought his way to eighth in the Grand Prix, marking his highest-scoring race to date.
Coming off a series of less-than-ideal races, the German driver demonstrated resilience and strategy. Starting from an improved grid position due to George Russell's power unit penalties, Hulkenberg capitalized on a strong start, overtaking Pierre Gasly and Arvid Lindblad in the opening lap. This set the stage for a race-long pursuit of Liam Lawson.
Reflecting on his performance, Hulkenberg noted, "I had a good lap one, a good feeling today, an instinct as to where to go. I think inside of Turn 2 and on the exit, I got another position. So yeah, that was nice and set us up for a good race." He was acutely aware of the close competition from the Racing Bulls and Alpine teams behind him.
Hulkenberg's racecraft was particularly evident in the closing stages, as he faced a determined George Russell. The Mercedes driver, charging from P19, applied pressure but couldn't find a way past. "George at the end was a bit sketchy," Hulkenberg admitted. "I didn't think at the beginning it would be possible, but then found a better rhythm and closed the gap to Liam and picked up a bit of an indirect tow, which really helps us on the straight to pick up a bit of straight line speed."
Audi's racing director, Allan McNish, praised Hulkenberg's efforts, highlighting his experience and strategic thinking. "Today he just showed his width of experience, and also I would say his racing brain," McNish commented. "He really played a really good game. And then ultimately was able to actually pull away from George, and start to catch up a wee bit on Lawson."
This result was a much-needed boost for Audi, especially after losing points late in the race in both Baku and Sepang. McNish reflected on the significance of the performance, "After the last two races, where we lost a point on the last lap twice, it was actually I think something that everybody in the garage appreciated, the defence that Nico had on it. He wasn't going to lose that one."
Hulkenberg’s eighth place in Singapore not only offered a reprieve from recent disappointments but also showcased his ability to adapt and excel under pressure. The performance was a testament to his skill and determination, leaving Audi and its fans hopeful for continued success.
