James Hinchcliffe Questions Racing Bulls' Potential Move to Drop Liam Lawson

James Hinchcliffe is puzzled by rumors that Liam Lawson might lose his Racing Bulls seat to Formula 2 driver Nikola Tsolov. Lawson has been a key figure for the team, leading them to fifth in the Constructors’ Championship.

James Hinchcliffe, the former IndyCar driver turned pundit, is scratching his head over the speculation that Liam Lawson could lose his Racing Bulls seat to up-and-coming Formula 2 driver Nikola Tsolov. Despite Lawson's strong performance this season, which sees him ninth in the Drivers’ Championship and a significant contributor to Racing Bulls' fifth-place standing in the Constructors’ Championship, the rumor mill suggests his position might not be secure.

Hinchcliffe, in his latest column, expresses disbelief at the idea of replacing Lawson, who has been a linchpin for the team, scoring 61 of their 100 points. He points out that Lawson also managed to score 14 points while temporarily driving for Red Bull, bringing his total for the season to 75. This puts him as the best performer outside of the top-tier teams.

Racing Bulls hasn't finalized their driver lineup for 2027, though Red Bull's roster is set. While Lawson and Arvid Lindblad are the current drivers, Nikola Tsolov is seen as the next talent in line for a Formula 1 promotion, according to Racing Bulls' team principal Alan Permane. Yet, Hinchcliffe is baffled that Lawson, the de facto team leader, is the one whose seat seems under threat.

Hinchcliffe acknowledges the talent of both Lindblad and Tsolov. He notes Tsolov's impressive trajectory through the junior ranks, while Lindblad has also shown considerable promise as a rookie. However, he argues that Lawson's consistent performance and leadership should make him a clear choice to retain his seat.

"Imagine achieving all that and then having your seat threatened by someone who hasn't even started a Grand Prix," Hinchcliffe quips, describing the scenario as a nightmare for any racing driver. He emphasizes that Lawson’s brief but impressive stint at Red Bull, filling in for the injured Isack Hadjar, showcases his capabilities as a determined and competitive driver.

Hinchcliffe argues for continuity, suggesting that Racing Bulls would benefit from stability in their driver lineup. He believes that while Tsolov's time will come, Lawson has earned the right to stay with the team, given his achievements and potential. "Lawson wants more and shows he is a true racer," Hinchcliffe writes, advocating for Lawson to continue alongside Lindblad in 2027.

In the world of Formula 1, where driver changes often hinge on future potential rather than past performance, Hinchcliffe's view is a call for Racing Bulls to appreciate what they already have in Lawson. After all, continuity could be the key to further success for the team.
