Jeremy Clarkson Faces Backlash Over Franco Colapinto Remark

Jeremy Clarkson stirred controversy with a joke about Franco Colapinto's nationality at the United States Grand Prix. The comment was not well-received, prompting criticism from Colapinto's manager and a response from Alpine.

Jeremy Clarkson has once again found himself in the spotlight, and not for reasons he might prefer. At the United States Grand Prix, the former Top Gear and Grand Tour host made a controversial joke concerning Franco Colapinto, suggesting the young driver received a grid penalty simply for being Argentinian. Clarkson, who has a history of stirring the pot, particularly with Argentina, didn't win any new fans with his quip.

Clarkson’s history with Argentina is a colorful one, most notably involving a Top Gear episode that ended in chaos. During a special where the hosts were to drive to Ushuaia for a game of car football, Clarkson's car bore a number plate—H982 FKL—that many took as a nod to the Falklands War. This led to unrest, with the team having to flee the country.

Fast forward to the present, Clarkson, a frequent visitor to the F1 paddock as a guest of Alpine, decided to make light of Colapinto’s engine penalty in Austin. Speaking with Sky Sports, he joked, "Franco’s got a grid penalty for being Argentinian. Probably. Well, I’d give him one for that. But anyway, that’s just because of what happened when we went there."

This comment didn't sit well with Colapinto’s manager, Jamie Campbell-Walter, who took to social media to express his disapproval. He wrote, "Jeremy Clarkson’s comments about Franco’s nationality were completely unacceptable. There is no place for remarks like this in Formula 1, regardless of who makes them or whether they are intended as a joke."

Campbell-Walter highlighted the efforts made to foster respect and end hostility in the sport, especially given the recent social media abuse directed at Colapinto and his team. "Franco and his supporters deserve better than this," he added.

Alpine, the team Clarkson often calls his 'local', also distanced themselves from the comments. In a statement to PlanetF1, they emphasized, "We’re aware of the comments made in a recent TV interview from a guest of the team in Austin. We would like to reiterate that these are personal views and do not align with the team’s values of promoting kindness and respect. Franco is our driver and has our full support."

While Clarkson might be used to ruffling feathers, this incident underscores the sensitivity required when discussing nationalities, especially in a sport striving for inclusivity. Perhaps a reminder that some jokes are best left unsaid, even for a man known for his outspoken nature.
