Kimi Antonelli is fighting off a viral illness just as he approaches a potential world championship victory in Mexico. Mercedes confirms his absence from media duties to focus on recovery.
Kimi Antonelli, on the cusp of clinching his first Formula 1 World Championship, finds himself in a battle off-track, as he recovers from a viral illness ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix. Mercedes confirmed that Antonelli, who needs only a ninth-place finish to secure the title and become the youngest champion in F1 history, will miss the media day at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Last weekend in Texas, Antonelli nearly wrapped up the championship, and now, as he aims to make history in Mexico, he's dealing with an unexpected hurdle. The virus has kept him from participating in Thursday's media obligations, where drivers typically engage with the press in official FIA conferences or team-organized sessions.
A Mercedes spokesperson stated, "Kimi is feeling under the weather today as he recovers from a viral illness. As a precaution, the FIA have excused him from his mandatory media duties to give him the chance to rest ahead of the weekend. We expect him to be back tomorrow. Thanks for understanding."
Antonelli isn't alone in his health struggles; Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas will also miss media day due to illness. The team noted, "Valtteri Bottas will unfortunately be unable to attend today’s media day in Mexico City as he is unwell. This is a precautionary measure and does not currently affect his participation in the remainder of the race weekend."
The relentless pace of the current F1 schedule could be contributing to these health issues. With nine races packed into an 11-week period, the demands are taking a toll on drivers and team members alike. Dr. Elina Haukipuro, a respected paddock physician, explained to PlanetF1.com that the lack of downtime is making it challenging for everyone involved to recover physically and mentally.
"Even if you are very fit, you’ve done all the correct preparation, it doesn’t shield you entirely from feeling the effects of travelling, jet lag, heat, just performing constantly and not getting a break like that," Dr. Haukipuro noted. She added that the current schedule doesn’t allow for proper rest and recovery, which is crucial for maintaining health and performance.
As Antonelli gears up for what could be a historic weekend, the F1 world will be watching closely to see if he can overcome both the physical and competitive challenges to secure his place in the record books.
