Kimi Antonelli Reflects on Overdriving in Barcelona Qualifying

Kimi Antonelli took a moment to review his performance after the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix qualifying, where he ended up in third place. Despite holding a commanding 66-point lead in the World Championship standings, Antonelli found himself behind teammate George Russell, who clinched pole, and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.

Antonelli's third-place finish marks the first time this season that he won't be starting from the front row. Reflecting on his qualifying session, the 19-year-old Italian confessed to overdriving his car amid tricky conditions. "Even though I missed FP1, I think this weekend I didn’t have enough pace over a single lap," Antonelli said. "I’ve been overdriving the car, and conditions are very tricky, very slippery, very hot. The tyres have just been running away a little bit from me."

Missing FP1 certainly didn't help, as reserve driver Fred Vesti took the wheel, leaving Antonelli to grapple with traffic in FP3. "I've been struggling to extract the maximum out of them for the whole lap," he admitted. Despite these challenges, he's shifting his focus to Sunday's race.

Looking ahead, Antonelli is optimistic about his chances on race day. "It’s going to be important to get a good start – it’s a long run into Turn 1, so I’m not in a bad position, to be fair," he noted. "Then it’s going to be important to really make the best out of the tyres, manage them well because it’s very hot and probably we’ll see a lot of stops as well tomorrow because it’s going to be hard to manage them."

Antonelli remains hopeful about his race pace, which looked promising in FP2. "Hopefully tomorrow we’ll have an even better race pace and we can progress," he concluded.

While not the start he hoped for, Antonelli's strategy and determination could still see him make a significant impact on race day.
