Kimi Antonelli has a chance to wrap up the 2026 F1 Drivers' Championship at the United States Grand Prix. Despite Max Verstappen's recent wins, Antonelli's lead presents a slim but possible opportunity for him to clinch the title.
Kimi Antonelli could potentially secure the 2026 F1 world title at this weekend's United States Grand Prix. With the race taking place at the Circuit of The Americas, Antonelli stands on the brink of his first chance to seal the Drivers’ Championship.
While Max Verstappen has claimed victories in the last two races, Antonelli has managed to extend his lead to a comfortable 102 points with just six races remaining. With no sprint races left on the calendar, the maximum points available are 150, giving Antonelli an outside shot at clinching the title in Austin.
To prevent Antonelli from being crowned champion, at least one among the five drivers still in contention must finish the weekend within 125 points of him.
Initially, the 2026 season seemed poised to be a showdown between the Mercedes teammates. However, Ferrari, McLaren, and later Red Bull have all shown competitive pace, shaking up the championship fight. Aside from Antonelli, the title contenders include:
- George Russell with 340 points, trailing by 102 - Lewis Hamilton with 229 points, trailing by 111 - Max Verstappen with 221 points, trailing by 119 - Charles Leclerc with 215 points, trailing by 125 - Lando Norris with 201 points, trailing by 139
For Antonelli to clinch the title at COTA, he must leave with a lead of over 125 points. If the Qatar and Abu Dhabi rounds were to be canceled, this threshold would reduce to 100 points.
However, the current scenario leaves Antonelli with one clear path: he must win the race. Anything less would not allow him to pull clear of Russell. Additionally, Russell must finish ninth or lower. Even if Russell finishes ninth, Antonelli’s ninth victory would give him the title on a countback. Lewis Hamilton also needs to finish fifth or lower, while Antonelli's victory would automatically put Verstappen, Leclerc, and Norris out of contention.
