Kimi Antonelli outpaced the competition at the United States Grand Prix with a bold one-stop strategy. While Ferrari and Red Bull stuck to their guns with a two-stop plan, Antonelli's approach proved unbeatable.
Kimi Antonelli delivered a masterclass at the United States Grand Prix, leaving his rivals scratching their heads. Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, had shown promising speed in practice sessions, but their race strategy didn't quite hit the mark. Despite a less-than-ideal qualifying, the Ferrari drivers managed to work their way into the podium fight. Yet, it was Antonelli’s performance that stole the show, as he executed a strategy that Ferrari hadn’t even considered.
While Ferrari and Red Bull opted for an aggressive two-stop strategy on soft tyres, Antonelli and Mercedes took a different route. Starting on medium tyres, Antonelli adhered to a one-stop strategy, which turned out to be a masterstroke. As his competitors, including Leclerc and Max Verstappen, pitted early, Antonelli maintained his pace and crossed the finish line 13 seconds ahead of Leclerc.
In the post-race press conference, Leclerc admitted that Ferrari hadn't anticipated such a strategy. "We thought Kimi might struggle towards the end, but he never did," Leclerc noted, reflecting on the race. He also mentioned that Red Bull shared Ferrari's strategic outlook, emphasizing the unexpected nature of Antonelli’s approach.
Bradley Lord, Mercedes' deputy team principal, shed light on their decision-making process, stating in an interview that their simulations showed the one-stop strategy to be significantly faster. "Our numbers suggested it was eight seconds quicker, and Kimi finished much further ahead," Lord remarked. This calculated risk paid off handsomely, with Antonelli not only securing victory but also managing his tyres expertly.
Although Leclerc might have closed the gap if Ferrari had adopted a similar strategy, credit must go to Antonelli for his flawless execution. With five races to go, Antonelli is inching closer to the championship, while the contest for second place remains fiercely competitive. The paddock will surely be watching closely to see whether Antonelli can maintain his momentum and seal the title in style.
