Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu shares insights into the decision to sign Rafael Camara for the 2027 season and the likelihood of retaining Ollie Bearman. The team's strategy focuses on developing young talent, with both drivers set to bring fresh energy to the grid.
In a recent conversation, Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu opened up about the rationale behind signing Rafael Camara for the 2027 season. The Brazilian, a Ferrari junior and current F2 championship leader, caught the eye of the American team due to his remarkable potential. "We see huge potential in Rafa," Komatsu remarked during a meeting in London, highlighting the excitement around nurturing Camara's talents.
Haas plans to enter the 2027 season with an energetic young duo, as Ollie Bearman is expected to stay for his third year. Both drivers will be 21, a stark contrast to veterans like Fernando Alonso, who is older than both combined. It's a daring approach, but one that Komatsu supports wholeheartedly.
Komatsu's confidence in Camara stems from observing his impressive performances, both in his title-winning F3 season and his current F2 campaign. In particular, a test session in Portimao, where Camara demonstrated adaptability and poise under varying conditions, solidified Haas's decision. "The rate of improvement was just incredible," Komatsu noted, emphasizing Camara's ability to remain unflustered despite challenging circumstances.
The test also included Leo Fornaroli, McLaren's reserve, and Haas's own reserve drivers Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa, but Camara's performance stood out. Komatsu was impressed not only by Camara's driving but also by his mental approach. "He wasn't focused on the result," Komatsu explained, praising Camara's ability to focus on factors within his control and strive to be his best self.
Following the test, Komatsu consulted with team owner Gene Haas about their driver options, ultimately landing on Camara as the frontrunner. Despite the risks associated with bringing in a rookie, Haas has a track record of successfully developing young talent, as evidenced by Bearman's own journey with the team.
Bearman's initial impact at Haas came after an impressive substitute performance for Ferrari in 2024, leading to a series of strong showings with Haas, including a standout P4 finish in Mexico. His continued progress and recent outperformance of teammate Esteban Ocon have reinforced Haas's confidence in supporting young drivers.
Looking ahead, Camara's focus remains on clinching the F2 championship, with races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi still to come. Meanwhile, Haas plans to integrate him into the team before the year's end, potentially giving him a run in FP1 at his home Grand Prix in Brazil and some laps during the post-season young driver test in Abu Dhabi.
Haas has yet to officially announce Bearman's return, but Komatsu expressed a strong desire to keep him on board. "He's such a great guy to work with," Komatsu said, lauding Bearman's speed, skill, and positive influence on the team. Despite a challenging season, Bearman's ability to motivate and uplift the team when results weren't favorable has not gone unnoticed.
Komatsu is optimistic about the future, pointing to Bearman's character and performance as a foundation for continuing their partnership. "Our objective is to continue with him next year," Komatsu confirmed, underscoring Haas's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for their young drivers.
