Laurent Mekies' Leadership Style Finds Favor at Red Bull

Laurent Mekies has impressed Red Bull since taking over from Christian Horner, highlighted by a new contract through 2031. His calm approach and team-first mentality have been a breath of fresh air for the team.

Laurent Mekies, having caught the eye of Red Bull with his behind-the-scenes work, has secured a contract extension until the 2031 F1 season. This comes after he stepped into the role of team principal in July last year, following the departure of Christian Horner after twenty years. Horner's exit, spurred by internal tensions after Dietrich Mateschitz's passing, marked the end of an era that included four consecutive drivers' championships thanks to Max Verstappen's prowess.

Upon taking the reins, Mekies quickly made his mark. Verstappen clinched a win in the F1 Sprint at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, a promising start for Mekies' tenure. Verstappen continued to excel, securing podium finishes in the remaining ten races of the 2025 season, including six victories. However, the start of the 2026 season was less smooth, with the RB22's balance issues causing headaches. Yet, a breakthrough came with an upgrade package in Baku, leading to a chain of successes including a double victory in Malaysia and Singapore.

Mekies’ contract renewal is a testament to his effective leadership, which has shifted the atmosphere at Red Bull's Milton Keynes base. His calm demeanor and avoidance of political maneuvering stand in stark contrast to the previous regime, where some felt Horner had amassed too much control. This approach has been particularly appreciated following the changes that came with Mateschitz's death.

Despite the successes, Mekies remains modest about his contributions. Even as Red Bull climbed back to the forefront of Formula 1, he downplayed his role in Verstappen's late-season title run in 2025. Instead, he credits the technical team led by Pierre Wache, who has been pivotal in addressing the car's performance issues. Additionally, the groundwork laid by Horner in establishing the Red Bull Powertrains program cannot be overlooked.

As Red Bull looks ahead, Mekies’ leadership style appears to be exactly what the team needs to continue thriving. His ability to unify and lead with humility sets a strong foundation for future successes, making him a valuable asset as the team navigates the ever-competitive world of Formula 1.
